Niall B. Bingham
" I have always had a problem with the question of medium. I never know what to say when people ask what medium I work in. My technical abilities are very firmly vested in Printmaking. But I love music, film, the smell and look of oil on canvas, darkroom photographs and many other things. My process of making is all about learning. I get bored when I’m not learning. I believe that comfort within one medium is very dangerous for my work, as I forget the possibilities of chance."
Niall Bingham was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in 1981 where he studied Fine Art at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, completing his BAVA (Hons) in 2005. Whilst studying printmaking under Vulindlela Nyoni, he developed a passion for the medium. He spent his second year of studies at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan on an exchange program, learning Japanese and training in Sumi-e painting and Japanese ceramic techniques.
His interest in printmaking led him to the David Krut Print Workshop (DKW) in Johannesburg, where he collaborated and printed for top South African artists including William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Paul Stopforth, Colbert Mashile, Willem Boshoff, Mary Sibande, David Koloane and many others.
His five-year stint at this acclaimed workshop ended at the beginning of 2011, after which he took up a position as Printmaking Technician at WITS University where he also completed his MAFA in 2016. He shared a seventh floor studio with the painter, Jessica Webster during this time.
His Masters thesis explores collaborative processes in South African printmaking studios, and he remains dedicated to learning about himself through collaboration.
Niall was an active member of the Bag Factory selection committee up until he relocated to Spain at the beginning of 2017, where he is currently living and working.
